Possible Destinations for
Off-duty Operators
For those who have some spare time or need to convince the family
that this outing is really a family event and not just a chance to
play with ham radio, southeastern Utah offers a variety of
interesting places to visit. It is close to two national parks,
two state parks, and a large number of BLM-designated scenic roads,
trails, and viewpoints. Mike Collett, K7DOU, has put together a
list for those who would like some suggestions.
- Arches National Park, just outside of Moab
- Dead Horse Point State Park
- Island in the Sky district of Canyonlands National Park
- Goblin Valley State Park
- Visiting the other radio sites
- Crystal Geyser, not far from Green River
- Long Canyon--the short-cut from Island in the Sky to
MGM (pretty exciting!)
- The switchbacks down from the plateau to Mineral Bottom
(Horsethief Trail)
- The uranium mine (abandoned) NE of Mineral Bottom
- The breathtaking views from Needles and Anticline overlooks
- The dramatic switchbacks of the Shafer Trail from Island in the Sky
