Deerfield Presbyterian Church

Church History

The Deerfield Presbyterian Church was founded on September 24, 1821.  The original eight members were Samuel and Sarah Stansberry, Josiah and Mary Wright, Thomas and Elizabeth Campbell, and John and Nancy Price.  The first house of worship was constructed of logs in 1822.  In 1839 the log church was torn down, and a new frame building was built.  In 1859 that building became unsafe and was replaced.  On October 8, 1877, the church caught fire during worship service, and burned to the ground.  However, this did not discourage the congregation, and fifty-three days later they worshipped God in a new and better building which is still in use today.
In the early twenties an ambitious building program was carried out.  A dining room and kitchen were added to the back of the church, and a new belfry and another room were added to the front.  Since that time a rest room, siding, and new doors have been added.
For many years, Deerfield Presbyterian Church has shared its ministers with the McConnelsville Presbyterian Church. This practice is still followed today.
